 Pottery Workshop, Baptist College, 20th September, 2025

The Skill Development Cell of Baptist College organised a ‘One Day Pottery Workshop with Highland Pottery Studio’ on the 20th of September, 2025 with Ms. Vizonuo Soliezuo, Founder, Highland Pottery Studio as the resource person.

The chairperson of the workshop was Dr. Avele Thirah , Convenor, Skill Development Cell. She highlighted on the-importance of conducting skill development program in the college. The main purpose of organising such programs is to impart practical life skills and employability among students.

After which the workshop began with the resource person describing different types of clay. The clay used for the workshop was terracotta clay. The resource person taught hand building technique and demonstrated wheel throwing.

The attendees were taught how to make pots and design it in ‘Hand building technique’ after which wheel throwing was demonstrated.

All together 24 students and 4 teachers attended the workshop.

 

Skill Development Workshop on Public Speaking and Communication Skills, 20th September, 2025

The Skill Development Cell Baptist College, Kohima in collaboration with Nagaland Institute of Language studies and Research (NILSR) successfully organized a workshop on Public Speaking and Communication Skills on the 20th of September, 2025 at Sechü Campus drawing participation from students and faculty members.

Ms. Rüülhouü Mere, Member of the Skill Development Cell, chaired the workshop. The formal proceedings commenced with a welcome address by Dr. Kekuchol Pusa, Principal of Baptist College, Sechü Campus. He highlighted the necessity of equipping students with effective communication abilities in a world where clarity of expression and persuasive speech are indispensable for both academic and professional success.

The resource person of the day, Ms. Theyievino Whiso, Founder and Academic Director of Nagaland Institute of Language studies and Research (NILSR), was introduced thereafter. With her extensive background and expertise, Ms. Whiso guided participants through two engaging and instructive sessions.

The first session (10:00 AM – 11:00 AM) focused on Public Speaking. Ms. Whiso emphasized the art of articulation by using simple language, the significance of developing mental cohesion and expanding one’s lexicon, confidence in delivery, and the need to balance content with presentation. She remarked that “daily practice, even in small amounts, significantly improves one’s command of English”. She provided practical tips such as thinking in single words, describing unknown words and gradually constructing sentences. The session also offered students with practical cognitive training exercises in organizing ideas coherently, and maintaining audience engagement.

Following a brief break, the second session (11:10 AM-12:10 PM) covered Communication Skills. Ms. Whiso stated that “proficiency in communication skills constitutes a decisive factor in achieving success during interviews”. She elaborated on both verbal and non-verbal dimensions of communication, highlighting the importance of tone, body language, and interpersonal awareness. She further emphasized the importance of responding in complete sentences and recommended reading aloud as a method to enhance both the speed and clarity of communication. The session involved active student participation through engaging exercises and interactive activities. Such initiatives by the Skill Development Cell continue to enrich the holistic education of students at Baptist College, Sechü Campus, preparing them for challenges that extend beyond the classroom into the wider world of professional and social life. The workshop concluded with a vote of thanks, followed by a photo session.
