Disaster Preparedness Programme Organised By Nss, Baptist College, Kohima, 19th of September, 2026

The NSS of Baptist College, Kohima organised a Capacity Building Programme on Disaster Preparedness in collaboration with 12th National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Itanagar, Arunachal Pradesh on 19th of September, 2026 at Rivenburgs Memorial Chapel.

The resource person, Mr. Vikhodi Rhetso, Team Commander 12th Battalion NDRF, Thizama, spoke on the Force’s formation under the Disaster Management Act, 2025 and its objective role and task of initiating search and rescue operation and assistance in distribution of relief materials in times of calamities and disasters. The NDRF force led by Mr. Rhetso carried out varied disaster demonstrations, focusing primarily on earthquake, choking accidents, use of fire extinguisher, rescue equipments and improvised floating devices during floods.

Nagaland being under a high seismic zone 5, the Force presented an elaborate demonstration on earthquake disaster preparedness evacuation drill based on “Drop, Cover, Hold” technique, exiting from the corner of the rooms to the safety/assembly zone, head-count in the safety/assembly zone, prepared medical team with first-aid kits, and operational alarm system. In cases of injuries and casualties, the Force demonstrated on bleeding control method based on press, elevation, and pressure point methods. They also demonstrated on resuscitation through CPR by following the “Circulation, Airway, Breathing”(CAB), “Look, Listen, Feel”(LLF) and “Left Lateral Position”(LLP) methods. Mr. Rhetso enlightened on the national toll free emergency numbers  during disasters – 108 and 112.

The Force demonstrated on choking accidents caused by “Foreign Body Airway Obstruction”(FBAO) through abdominal thrust method, and fire extinguisher demonstration through “Pull the pin, Aim the nozzle at the base of the fire, Squeeze the lever, Sweep side-by-side”(PASS) method. Varied rescue equipments used during disasters and improvised floating devices during floods were also demonstrated.

Earlier, note on the event was presented by Ms. Naro, NSS Programme Officer, Baptist College. Mr. Kevizhalhou Medom, NSS Programme Officer delivered the note of gratitude and Ms. Sezonu Temi, NSS Volunteer chaired the programme. Ms. Asola C. Jamir, NSS Programme Officer and Mr. Thrunso K., NSS Volunteer were the rapporteur and photographer respectively. The programme ended successfully with the hands-on practical demonstrations carried out by students under the  guidance and supervision of the NDRF Force.
