BCK Literature Fest, 2024
Baptist College, Kohima celebrated the 7th edition of the Literature Fest on the 28th of September,2024 under the theme “Literary Mosaic: Connecting Art and Literature”, organised by the department of English with event partners CUE Academy, Centre for Person-Centred Education and TakeOne production, Kohima.
The inaugural session was graced by Dr.Enunu Sale, with a prayer from Ms. Vesatolu, followed by “Heal the World” performed by the 5th Semester students. Dr. Tsenbeni, HoD, Department of English took the stage for a note on the event, highlighting the importance of art and literature and the relation between these two medium which is a product of creative expression. She also expressed on how truth, nuances of life, visual story telling, sounds or films are all forms of art that connect to literary product and that the aim of the fest is to foster and nurture the creativity and skills of the students. Author talk was presented by Dr. Neikehienuo Mepfhuo, who spoke on the decline of the oral story telling with the advancement of technology, even though Nagas have been publishing for years it is still at a nascent stage. She talked on how we should look to rewrite and document, instead of relying on colonial tellings, not as a weapon, to injure or for revenge but to be heard and listened to seriously. She also shed light on the subtle oppression of women and the difficulty to get narrations from the victims of domestic violence, along with the lack of empathy and mismanagement of mental health issues, leading to the passing on of the trauma to the next generation. She concluded with a quote from Easterine Kire about taking pride in our own writings as Nagas.
Workshops and talks took place with the participation of students, including students from various colleges, where Academic Writing workshop was taken up by Dr. Adenuo Shirat Luikham, the participants were given two tasks to solve to enhance vocabulary skills. While Creative Writing workshop was conducted by Ms.Asano Zashu who touched upon the different forms of writing, what stops a person from writing and tips for writing, she also held a practical writing session for the participants. For the Clay Modelling, Mr.Mhasiselhu Viyie provided the participants with dry leaves and models to replicate with clay, with constant suggestions and directions from the resource person. A talk on “Images and Sounds as Memory Keepers” by Ms.Sesino Yhoshu, screened some short films from the”Narratives from the Battle of Kohima” which highlighted how people related to sensory or emotional memories. And finally from “Lest we Forget” about how we remember the events of a particular day.
The closing session was chaired by Mrs.Loly Chophi,followed by a skit by the BA 1st semester students, Department of English. Mock interview competition was held with Dr.Sentinaro, Ms. Asola C.Jamir and Ms.Suvilu Venuh as the interview board followed by Mr. Manvu S. Phom’s “I will always be there”. The winners of the mock interview was declared, with Ms.Ekali Assumi,B.A 5th semester, Department of English as the winner and Mr. Rohan Chetri,B.A 5th semester, Department of English as the runner up. The vote of thanks was delivered by the chairperson and the closing prayer by Ms.Nozenu Kikhi, B.A 5th semester.
