The Village Adoption Committee, Baptist College Kohima, in collaboration with the Department of Agriculture, Government of Nagaland conducted an ‘Agriculture Awareness Programme’ on 22nd August, 2026, at the Kiruphema Bawe Village Council Hall. The programme aimed to create awareness among youth and farmers on sustainable agriculture, soil health, and the importance of leguminous crops in improving productivity.
The resource person, Ms.Vimenuo Mere, BTM, JakhamaBlock, conducted ‘Training on Use of Leguminous Crops for Soil Health Improvement and Sustainable Production’. During the session, she explained the concept of leguminous crops, their different types, and their importance in sustainable agriculture. She highlighted how they reduce dependence on chemical fertilizers, improve soil fertility, and support better crop growth. She also spoke about soil layers, crop rotation, intercropping, cover cropping, integrated farming, and the use of the Soil Health Card. She emphasized the need for smart farming practices to achieve better cultivation and reduce reliance on outside vegetables grown with heavy use of fertilizers and medicines.
This was followed by PPT presentations from Miss Avono, Agriculture Inspector and in-charge of Sechü Zubza Block, and Miss Kikrukhrienuo Rutsa, Agriculture Inspector. Miss Avono spoke on the activities and key achievements of the Department of Agriculture, Government of Nagaland, including schemes such as RKVY, NFSNM, PMKSY, PM-Kisan, National Mission on Natural Farming, and SMAM. Miss Kikrukhrienuo Rutsa gave a presentation on the role of leguminous crops in soil health and sustainable management, focusing on biological nitrogen fixation, soil improvement, and long-term productivity.
After the presentations, it was followed by a question-and-answer session, allowing participants to interact with the speakers and clarify their doubts. This was followed by a practical session involving the distribution of seeds and agricultural implements, along with a field demonstration on the use of a hand-push manual seeder machine.
The programme was chaired by Miss Kethosenuo Medoze, Convenor of the Village Adoption Committee. Welcome address was given by Mr. Kezhalelhou Zatsu, member, Village Adoption Committee and the vote of thanks was delivered by Dr. Khobu Tsolo, member, Village Adoption Committee. A total of 80 participants attended the programme, comprising 50 villagers, 4 teaching faculty members, 20 students and 6 representatives from the Department of Agriculture, Government of Nagaland.
This programme was highly beneficial as it helped participants understand the value of sustainable farming, the importance of soil health, and the role of government schemes in agricultural development. It also encouraged farmers and youth to adopt modern and eco-friendly farming practices for better future productivity.
