                        Sociological Dialogue -I

Department of Sociology, Baptist College Kohima & Sechü campus organized its first Sociological Dialogue on the topic “A Critical Analysis on the ULB Election, 2024: Politics and People’s Participation” on 17th August, 2024 at Rivenburgs Memorial Chapel with Dr. Aosunep, Assistant Professor, Department of Political Science, St. Joseph College (Autonomous), Jakhama as the Speaker.

 

Dr. Aosunep elaborated on the possibility of ULB election 2024 highlighting the repeal of Nagaland Municipal Act 2001 which was replaced by Nagaland Municipal Act 2023. Although the election could not be conducted in 14 ULBs under ENPO, the ULB election which was held on 26th June 2024 after two decades in Nagaland is acknowledged as one of the most peaceful, free and fair election with minimal discrepancies. Out of a total of 278 ULBs in Nagaland, women occupy 102 seats and men 176 seats.

 

In his critical analysis, the speaker commented on some of the limitations such as lack of accessible platform particularly proper website which has led to dissemination of information a challenge; inadequacy in provision for PWDs, infirm individuals and senior citizens; insufficient arrangement leading to dehumanizing activities in some polling station and the absence of NOTA option in the postal ballot. He also commented that Electoral roll should be made accessible online which will enable citizens to update and rectify their details. In his concluding remarks, Dr. Aosunep lamented on how Nagas choose leaders basing on community consent neglecting the ideologies and manifesto for which he calls upon the students’ community to uphold the values of Democracy and maintain free and fair election even in State Assembly Election.

 

In the introduction to Sociological Dialogue-I, Dr. Videkhono Yhokha introduced the concept and objective of the event. The main objective of Sociological Dialogue is to create a platform for discussion on various critical issues inviting scholars and academicians from diverse fields which will enable students to gain knowledge beyond sociological perspectives. The Department plans to continue Sociological Dialogue as an annual event.

 

Dr.Khobu Tsolo chaired the program and Ms. T. Setingla pronounced the invocation. The talk was followed by a discussion hour and vote of thanks  proposed by Ms. Toni Awomi.
